My Aunt Marilyn, my dad's only sibling, passed away last winter. She and I were buddies and I still miss her a lot.

Hearts and Bees

This week our class tasted honeycomb honey and read more about bees. We also worked on a simple Mother's Day project. I made these papier mache' hearts for the kids to paint. I call it the "Words Cannot Tell You How Much I Love You, Mom" project. We used watercolor paints so the words would still show through. They looked neat when the kids were done.

I used scraps from my book initial cutting. I formed paper strip pulp into hearts on a paper plate. They were baked an hour or two at 200 degrees F. to help them dry more quickly. When dry, I trimmed the paper plates close to the heart shape. This gave the hearts a nice smooth back that can be written on if desired. Older kids could make their own hearts if you planned ahead so they had time to dry. I imagine the pulp could also be packed into heart shaped molds if you needed to make a lot of them. I also though they could have a hole drilled through them for hanging or jewelry use.

To complete the project, the kids filled out this Mom worksheet on their own.

Husband and I went for a two night trip to a RR meeting in Texas. The weather (and the hotel) was lovely. Always good to get away together.

Piano Recital

Last Sunday the girls had their Spring piano recital. Laura was the only senior graduating and played three songs. She did a nice job as the featured performer. More pretty pictures of her.

Washington, DC

Now that Husband is traveling a lot for Soybean Board duties and the kids are older, we are trying to make some times when one goes with him for short trips. Since she is a senior this year, we started with L. going on a visit to Washington DC. It worked very well. Now we are going to try to take our other kids in turn.

Update: Richard's cousin Bob commented on FB:

 "I remember the day of the top picture. I was playing football afterwards and stained my nice pants with grass. Trouble with Ma. I also remember Uncle Howard putting an electric space heater in Rich's car in case the honeymoon cabin turned cold, (in the Black Hills, I think). I doubt if they ever needed it."

May Day!

What fun to come home from a long day in town and find bright May Day baskets mysteriously left for us while we were out! I had to somewhat reassemble them for this picture since they were immediately ravished. Seems these May Day treaters know just the kind of things we like!

Red Work Embroidery

I needed a project I could take on a plane, so I got a few dish cloths to embroider. I looked on-line for patterns and ideas. I wanted to do "redwork" to match the sides of the towels I bought. I finally decided to use this pattern. I found it on a vintage dish cloth that I had. I stuck the dishcloth in my printer and ran a copy of it. It worked very well. Easy way to print out a pattern.
